1. Fill a plastic bowl with lukewarm water, a few drops of washing-up liquid and 1 teaspoon of ammonium chloride per litre of water. Let the silver soak for approximately 10-15 minutes.

3. Wash with clean water and dry with a soft cloth. Using a hair dryer is a good way of making sure it is completely dry. It avoid dull stains forming on the bunad silver.

A useful friend to have when you are polishing sewn-on buttons. The polishing wrap protects the bunad fabric while you are polishing the buttons up nice and shiny.

Be careful when using different silver polish. Many of these can be too strong and remove both the gild and the shine.

Storage

In order for your bunad silver to stay nice over time, you need to store it dry in an acid-free and airtight plastic bag or fabric bag. Never use rubber bands as they contain sulphur, which causes oxidation and dirty spots.

Even after being stored properly, the bunad silver will often need a more thorough clean. Take it to your local goldsmith who will give you the help you need.
